A Gift from the Heart: Two Young Women Teach Us the Meaning of Gratitude

Since 1994, Sankofa International, Inc. has been serving vulnerable communities throughout Ghana, helping families and individuals struggling to meet their basic needs. Sankofa asks for nothing in return. Yet on June 6, 2026, Richard Willis, President and CEO of Sankofa International, received a powerful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can leave a lasting impact. That morning, two young women from Alogboshie—Vida and Faustina surprised Richard with an extraordinary gift. Despite facing their own daily challenges and having very limited financial resources, they saved money from roadside sales and other small jobs to purchase fabric and handcrafted two beautiful African-style shirts as a token of appreciation for Sankofa's work. What made their gift even more moving was that they walked through a heavy rainstorm, without an umbrella or raincoat, to personally present it. Deeply touched by their generosity and sacrifice, Richard struggled to hold back tears. Adding to the surprise, the shirts fit perfectly, despite them never having taken his measurements. Their heartfelt gesture was a beautiful expression of gratitude and a powerful reminder that the greatest gifts are not measured by their cost, but by the love, sacrifice, and appreciation behind them.
